Driving down the highway I heard the familiar ping of my phone, telling me I had received a new e-mail. Against my better judgment, I decided to check it while driving. The next few minutes were a blur as I realized I had been accepted into Harvard, a goal I had dreamed obsessively about since I was a child. At the time I was living in Louisiana, a state celebrated for its culture but one that continuously ranks as one of the lowest states for education. I wanted to be in a thriving intellectual community and I set my sights on arguably the top school in the country. Over the next few months, I fretted nervously, planned obsessively, packed up my belongings and drove across the country to Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Though my experience at Harvard was nothing like I imagined, it was incredible. Even two years into my program, I found it surreal to be surrounded by so many outstanding resources, archival materials, and professors. I studied with leaders of my field, men and women who had written countless articles and books on subjects I wanted to know more about. I had one-on-one meetings with award-winning scholars, who gave me feedback on my own work. I took classes on any subject that interested me, thanks to Harvard’s policy of allowing students to cross-register among the different schools schools. Through Harvard’s renowned library system, I had access to a bevy of online and print resources, on nearly any topic I could think of. No matter how obscure a book, pamphlet, or newspaper was, the outstanding research librarians at Harvard obtained it for me. Of particular interest for my own studies was the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America. I remember holding National Woman’s Party leader Alice Paul’s journal from her freshman year at Swarthmore, finding it unbelievable that something so rare and valuable was made available to me as a Harvard student.

Everyone’s experience at Harvard is unique, and you may find yourself attracted to the University for wholly different reasons. I can promise, however, that it will be the experience of a lifetime and some of the most formative years of your life. This book will not guarantee you admission, but it will become an invaluable resource for your application process and is sure to make the procedure a bit less daunting. From facts about the University to the application process, to tips on writing a winning essay, this book will help you every step of the way. Once you are in, you will forge your own path, but for now use the wisdom of those who have gone before you and do not be afraid to reach out to other knowledgeable people. They will likely be happy to help.
